88. La performance al Grace Exhibition Space. Dietro le quinte e qualche foto

 

Avevo deciso di fare un lavoro sul cibo.
Lo decido perché è la summa di un’esperienza pluriennale del mio stare qui a New York, oltre a un’esperienza pluriennale di interesse alla qualità del cibo, al mangiare bene e alla cura naturale. In più qui in America più che altrove, il cibo – come tutto – è oggetto di marketing sfrenato e tutto fa capo ai soldi. Ho vissuto e pensato e sperimentato tantissimo su questo argomento e fatto riflessioni composite per molti anni. In più questa volta, arrivando a New York a gennaio, ho cominciato subito a fare una serie di fotografie centrate sul rapporto col cibo. Per cui ora era proprio giunto il momento di parlare di questa cosa, e parlarne voleva dire usare il mio linguaggio, e fare un’azione di performance mista con foto e testi, dove ho messo tutto ciò che volevo dire, che sentivo, pensavo e comunicavo. (Credo che noi artisti creiamo cose perché non siamo capaci di esprimere con un linguaggio comune la sottigliezza delle cose che vorremmo esprimere, e allora ti devi trovare un linguaggio appropriato per comunicarlo).

 

Ovviamente avrei potuto fare al Grace Exhibition Space un lavoro già preparato e già sperimentato, dove non avrei avuto la vertigine dei tempi della creazione e dei tempi stretti della scadenza, ma sapevo che questo nuovo “Food Project” era ciò di cui avevo esigenza ORA di fare e che lo dovevo assolutamente fare in America, perché è stato incubato qui, e il linguaggio che voglio usare ha senso qui. E sempre un po’ sacrificandomi per l’arte e per esprimermi, mi sono messa in questa gara di preparare e inventare tutto per tempo (e poiché a New York le cose accadono, ma tutto è veloce, ho avuto la conferma della data solo un paio di settimane prima e non si sarebbe potuta rimandare più in là, perché dopo dovevo prendere un aereo …).

 

A volte invidio un po’ le persone che lavorano nel teatro. Loro producono degli spettacoli, impiegano le risorse per molto tempo, poi però per magari un anno, o comunque moltissime repliche, vanno in giro a portare quello stesso spettacolo già preparato. Almeno la fatica della preparazione ha i suoi benefici e viene diciamo, sfruttata … Invece per noi non è così. Nell’arte contemporanea, e nella performance, ogni evento è unico e irripetibile. Ogni performance è un qui ed ora, hinc et nunc, irripetibile. A volte ho impiegato anche anni a preparare dei progetti (v. per esempio la complessa performance ‘The finger and the Moon #2’) e poi la fai una volta sola. Poi impiego pure molti mesi per lavorare ai video. E basta. Fine. Il lavoro rimane. E’ esposto. Viene visto, ma non si ripete. A volte ciò mi frustra un po’. Eppure poi sono io per prima che lo scelgo: infatti quando mi invitano a ripetere le performances, io di solito non lo faccio. Al limite, se mi interessa, parto dal progetto ma lo modifico adeguandolo al territorio e allo spazio. Credo proprio che una delle differenze più sostanziali tra la performance art e il teatro sia proprio questa ‘unicità’ versus la ‘ripetibilità’, la presenza dell’esserci Vs la recitazione di qualcosa. Non dico una è meglio una è peggio. Sono solo sostanzialmente diverse (tanto è che nel passato mi offrirono più volte di ‘recitare’ a teatro, ma non ne sono minimamente capace né mi interessa, perché riesco solo a fare ‘me stessa’ ed esprimere ciò che sento in quel dato momento).

 

Cosa ho fatto per la performance a Brooklyn? Ho creato una videopresentazione con le – belle – foto fatte in questi mesi newyorkesi sul cibo, sul marketing, sui dollari e la fame. Poi ho scritto dei commenti poetici alle foto che ho messo in parallelo nel video e ho mandato il video, grande, a tutta parete, durante la performance, con la funzione di contrappunto e dialogo con l’azione live, in quanto ciò che facevo con le azioni era spesso in contrasto e contrapposizione con ciò che la gente vedeva nel video. E, sia giocosa che professionale, precisissima, ma ironica, mentre andavano le immagini e le riflessioni, ho cucinato live per 30 persone. I puri, perfetti, decantati e amati spaghetti col sugo fatti a regola d’arte (ovviamente, dato che sono italiana), di quelli da leccarsi i baffi e che in America non sanno cosa sia ma che adorano anche con i surrogati, e poi ho invitato il pubblico a condividere il cibo, a fare festa, a fare banchetto. Perché il cibo è anche incontro, e non solo sfruttamento, è socialità, e non solo biologia, è dono e non solo marketing. Ho voluto appositamente portare lì una parte importante della mia italianità, il rapporto col cibo e la socialità ad esso connessa. Avevo il bisogno di dichiarare la mia identità e la mi appartenenza. In modo evidente, ma non banale.
Ancora per una volta la mia performance era un dono, perché mi sono spremuta come un limone per un mese, ho dato ogni mia fibra (compreso lo stress della stanchezza) e come spesso accade non ho preso il becco di una lira, ma il senso del dono del cibo e del darsi e dell’offrirsi era anche uno dei sensi del lavoro.

 

(P.S. Per cucinare cotanta roba al Grace Exhibition Space ho letteralmente smontato la cucina dell’appartamento in cui vivevo nell’East Village, e devo essere grata a Fred, il mio padrone di casa, per avermi lasciato usare e trasportare attrezzi vari e pure la sua cucina a piastre elettriche …
Inciso: – consiglio a tutti gli aspiranti performer e artisti di essere maschi o mascolini principalmente, o fare molto sollevamento pesi, perché così si riescono più facilmente a sgroppare tutti i materiali che occorrono perchè si fa una fatica boia (io sono robusta in molte cose ma la forza nelle braccia no, non ce l’ho proprio, e o stramazzo o devo chiedere aiuti vari a destra e a manca o a pagamento …) – fine dell’inciso.
