La serie Virus è un progetto che si è sviluppato nelle seguenti fasi:

Virus rende concreti e visibili, in maniera provocatoria e ironica, i meccanismi sociali e individuali della bulimia dell’acquisto e della mercificazione del mercato, che si avverte non solo nel mondo dell’arte ma anche nella vita quotidiana. La performance di LIUBA, che nell’inaugurazione di Artefiera ha ‘infettato’ con miriadi di bollini rossi le opere esposte, ha destabilizzato il sistema creando confusione tra i lavori venduti e non, ironizzando sul rapporto tra valore commerciale e valore artistico dell’opera.
Il virus si diffonde in maniera esponenziale divenendo il protagonista unico e incontrastato, dove non è più importante la qualità ma la quantità, non cosa si compra ma quanto si possiede.
“In the series called Virus, the artist is a sort of living sculpture. Dressed in a black outfit with red dots, the notorious sold stickers, the artist went to art fairs and placed them under several works under the noses of upset gallerists and stunned visitors. The sold dot is a universal sign that makes the difference. You judge a work in another way if it has been sold. Red dots mean money, power, and often fame.”

La stessa performance, fatta in luoghi differenti, dimostra come il contesto e la performance si influenzino a vicenda, offrendo una riflessione sulla realtà circostante. La performance Virus New York, realizzata al Sofa Fair a Manhattan, ha avuto esiti completamente differenti da quella realizzata a Bologna, e implicazioni aggiuntive, ben visibili nella videoinstallazione che mette a confronto i due relativi video.
Il virus che LIUBA ha incarnato alla fiera di New York ha portato scompiglio e divertimento, diventando il vero protagonista della fiera e, destabilizzando con ironia il sistema, ha messo in crisi i parametri consueti del mondo dell’arte. A New York la performance ha portato stupore, allegria, curiosità e rifiuto… reazioni divertite, complici ed entusiaste, ma anche galleristi arrabbiati, confusi, terrorizzati non vendere…la performance infine è stata interrotta dallo Show managment e LIUBA espulsa dalla fiera.
Il video inizia con questa espulsione (le riprese erano proibite e sono state fatte di nascosto), che rende sempre più sottile e ambiguo il confine tra realtà e performance, e col paradossale dialogo sull’onnipotenza del dio-vendita e del dio-denaro negli Stati Uniti.

“On the opening night one of our artists turned the entire fair into a living breathing sculpture. Liuba, who came from Milan to perform, dressed in a black outfit and covered herself in oversized red sold dots. Walking around the fair she chose works and placed dots on the walls next to them. The piece is called “Virus” and has been performed with great success all over Europe.
The point of this performance is to point out the temporary nature of these fairs and the difference between reality and fiction which we in the art world create with these fairs and in our everyday dealing. The sold dot is the most prominent marking and is universal in the art world so it is a great way to make a point about how we exist and what we believe.
One of the purposes of performance art and happening is the illicit different response from different types of people and to then capture them on film. She is in this way creating a portrait of an event or a period. The films serve as documentation of her temporary creation and are sold as the final product. The SOFA NY footage quickly became one of her finest happenings. Many people loved what she stood for and what she was doing and you can see in the soon to be edited film and these still the excitement she created.
However, some became very upset for unknown reasons. Perhaps too much of the spotlight was going onto one artist. She was then escorted out of the building by military personnel. While she was outside the building she tried to film the floor mat at the entrance which ironically said “Welcome”. Even outside the building they found a reason why she shouldn’t be filming. The military men confronted her camera woman. They confiscated her ID and Passport and told her that she had to destroy the tape in the camera or they would keep her papers. Fortunately it was a new tape and nothing was really lost.”

L’azione è un ampliamento della performance ‘Virus’. E’ un ampliamento che funziona per contagio.
Il contagio inizia quando LIUBA trasmette il virus al gruppo di studenti dell’Accademia di Belle Arti di Bologna (coordinati e organizzati dalla prof. Barbara Ceciliato), trasferendo sul loro corpo i bollini rossi, come una investitura. Il virus si diffonde ed esponenzialmente arriva ad altre persone, che a loro volta faranno la performance.
Il contagio sarà un rituale e come un atto di consegna: il passaggio del virus della performance, che esce da LIUBA per andare a contagiare altri performers che faranno l’azione.
La performance diventa ‘trasmettibile’ ed estendibile. L’idea può essere performata da chiunque.
Durante l’opening della Fiera gli studenti hanno girato per la Fiera replicando la performance Virus di LIUBA, ciascuno nella propria modalità, e ciascuno… comprando molte opere!
