Ricevo questa notizia e mi sembra interessante divulgarla … è incredibile, questo mi piace di New York, che anche se la vita è dura nessuno si piange addosso e si cercano sempre soluzioni.
Non c’è voluto molto per rendermi conto, in questi mesi, che la crisi qui si sente eccome, e anche nel mondo dell’arte. Rispetto alla città che ho vissuto nel 2005-2006, quando venni qui per la prima volta e feci le varie mostre con la ‘pazza’ galleria (se volete leggere le avventure potete guardare il diario New York, che è come un preblog, le notizie arrivavano a tutti attraverso una mailing list) in questo periodo si respira un’aria totalmente differente. Non si sente più l’euforia, la percezione di essere al centro del mondo, con tutte le possibilità in divenire e in potenzialità.
Ora le persone tirano la carretta anche qui, l’ottimismo si è spento, altri luoghi stanno diventando il centro del mondo e da altre parti le energie sono propulsive, qui non più. E gli americani lo sentono, e ne hanno anche molta paura. Quasi tutte le persone che conosco lavorano duro, e questo vabbè, ma il peggio è che molti devono fare due lavori, o lavorare una media di 10-12 ore al giorno per sei giorni su sette perchè altrimenti ti licenziano e assumono la miriade di persone specializzate che provengono da altri paesi, disposte ad accettare salari molto bassi … Anche fra gli artisti e i galleristi non ho trovato più quella gioia ed effervescenza incontrata alcuni anni fa. Tutti gli artisti hanno un altro lavoro, spesso connesso con le loro abilità (fare video di matrimoni, cucinare e fare catering a domicilio, alcuni fanno i dog sitter, altri lavorano nella chimica o si inventano collezioni di lingerie firmate da vendere). Il punto a favore è che qui si riesce a vendere di tutto (e ancora io mi domando come fanno!) e ciascuno riesce a vendere ciò che produce o a vendere sè stesso, ma la richiesta comincia a diventare sempre più bassa.
Ma ora bando alle ciance ed ecco la notizia: il sindaco Bloomberg ha deciso di finanziare, nei prossimi due anni, l’arte a New York, mettendo a disposizione 32 milioni di dollari.
Direi che è una decisamente eccezionale iniziativa, e, scusate se ve lo dico, i nostri politici invece di farci vergognare con la sarabanda di atti osceni, potrebbero rifletterci un po’ su e , ma questo è chiedere troppo, imparare a capire che anche l’arte è un bene pubblico che giova alla società, e per questo motivo va supportata.

A year after ending a charitable program that pumped nearly $200 million into hundreds of arts and social-service organizations, Mayor Michael Bloomberg is reopening the pipeline to his personal fortune through his multibillion-dollar family foundation.
Beginning Tuesday, Mr. Bloomberg’s foundation will send letters to 250 cultural groups around the five boroughs, inviting them to apply for some of the $32 million the charity plans to distribute to arts organizations over the next two years. “At Bloomberg Philanthropies, we see the arts as fundamental to New York City’s cultural and economic wellbeing,” the letter says.
